In Silica Enzymes Nano-engineering towards Nanobiotechnology and Nanomedicine

Patrick Shahgaldian is a professor of Molecular Nanotechnology at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). He studied biochemistry at the University of Lyon and obtained a PhD in supramolecular chemistry working with Prof. Tony Coleman at the Institute of Biology and Chemistry of Proteins. He worked on the design of amphiphilic macrocyclic molecules (i.e., calixarenes, cyclodextrins) and their ability to self-assemble at interfaces and in water. After a postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Physics of the University of Basel, he moved to FHNW where he was appointed professor. His group focuses on designing functional nanomaterials with molecular recognition or (bio)catalytic properties. In addition, two biotech companies were spun off from his research activities, namely INOFEA and Perseo Pharma. He is currently a member of the board of directors of both companies. In addition to coauthoring over 100 research manuscripts, he has co-invented over 12 patents.
